Roumeli is the home of the kleftic songs and the heartland of the tsamikos: clarinet, violin and laouto play slow, proud tunes while the leader improvises leaps and turns. In Attica the Arvanites kept a repertoire of their own, such as the ntarsa, with women’s dances at the centre of every feast. Megara is known for the Easter Tuesday Trata and the carnival loulouvikos, while in southern Euboea the kavontoritikos of Karystia recalls the days of bagpipe and lyra.
