Who dances it: Everyone
A circle dance of the syrtos family in 7/8 (3+2+2), regarded as the national dance of Greece and danced throughout the country and the diaspora. It is said to come from the Peloponnese, Kalamata in particular; the name is tied to the song "Mantili kalamatiano" and the town's silk handkerchiefs. The basic phrase has 12 steps in four groups of three and always starts on the right foot, smoother for women and more leaping for men. Schools spread it from the late 19th century on, and in 2024 it was added to Greece's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Kalamatianos: Dance of the northern Continental Greece, variation of the land Round Dance with 7 bar melody. It’s often mentioned as a Pan-Hellenic dance, although it was unknown or obtrusive to the largest part of the Greek area. It became the symbol of the unfettered “Old Greece” and thus it was spread to the other regions before and after their embodiment to the Greek state. Also called: Round Dance, Kalamatianos Round Dance.
