Character

Who dances it: Everyone

A women’s dance of Megara, held on Easter Tuesday in the square of the church of St John the Galilean (“the Dancer”), with the dancers in Megara’s festive costumes. It is named after the movement of the line, which recalls a fishing net (trata) being hauled in. Tradition links it to the building of the church in a single day under Ottoman rule; folklorists consider it older. The women once danced only to their own singing; today a band accompanies them.
