Solo, improvised dance, traditionally for men.

Character

Who dances it: Everyone

It takes its name from the Zeybeks, irregular fighters of western Asia Minor, and is mentioned as early as the 17th century at feasts in Magnesia (Manisa) and Aydın. Once a face-to-face dance for two armed men, it became a solo, improvised men's dance in 9/8 with no set steps, only figures within a small space. After 1922 refugees brought it to Greek cities, where it became the signature dance of rebetiko; today women dance it too.
