Character
Who dances it: Everyone
The basic form of the syrtos on the Aegean islands: every island, and often every village, has its own version, such as the syrtos of Naxos, Kythnos or Serifos. It is danced in an open circle with joined hands, livelier and with more sway than the mainland syrtos, and the leader improvises freely. At festivals it usually comes before the ballos; on islands such as Kythnos it is also danced in couples.
