Character

Who dances it: Everyone

The signature dance of Pogoni, an area now divided between Greece and Albania, so it is danced on both sides of the border. It belongs to the 'sta dio' (in two) type: the phrase has six moves in two motifs of three. Musicians tell apart 'slow' and 'medium' pogonisia in 4/4 and 'fast' ones in 7/8, such as 'Ta manousakia'. In Pogoni villages a feast often begins and ends with a pogonisios.
