Character

Who dances it: Everyone

The best-loved and most representative dance of Lefkada, named after the song 'Milia mou pou 'sai ston gkremo' (Apple tree on the cliff edge). It is a 'double' dance: it starts as a syrtos in 2/4 and continues in 7/8, in the form of the kalamatianos. It used to be a women's dance, danced at every wedding, often only to the dancers' own singing; today men and women dance it alternately, with a woman leading.
