Character

Who dances it: Everyone

'Kerkyraikos' is the general name for the local syrtos of Corfu, the main dance at village festivals, weddings and carnival, in 2/4. Traditionally the women dance soberly and smoothly, linked by tied handkerchiefs, while a man in front, the 'kefali' (head), improvises flourishes and a second man closes the line as the 'kouda' (tail). Each area has its own tunes and variants (Gastouritikos, Synniotikos, Agyriotikos and others): slower in the north, faster in the south. 'Rouga' is one of its best-known songs.
