Character
Who dances it: Couples
The main suite of men's face-to-face dances in the Greek-Cypriot tradition, danced in a fixed order: first, second, third, fourth and fifth karsilamas (the ballos). The first and fourth share the same steps, while the second and third use stamps and crossed feet. Between the third and fourth the dancers stop and exchange tsiattista (improvised sung couplets), which is why the men's karsilamas is also called "tragoudistos" (sung). The karsilamas dances are in 9/8; for the first, the rare grouping 2+3+2+2 has also been recorded.
