Character

Who dances it: Everyone

A slow, stately dance, much loved in Northern Epirus and across Epirus. The name comes from the town of Berat in present-day Albania, where it probably originated. The rhythm is solemn at first and speeds up as the clarinet ornaments the melody, often ending with a turn into a pogonisios. The berati of Metsovo, in 7/8, is more cheerful and was danced at weddings as the relatives escorted the couple to church.
